Sustainability at Sambrook’s Brewery – Our Commitment to the Environment

At Sambrook’s Brewery, we are passionate about crafting exceptional beers while minimizing our environmental impact. Sustainability is at the heart of our business, and we are committed to making continuous improvements. In this blog, we share our journey, the steps we are taking, and our future goals to become a more eco-friendly brewery.

The Environmental Impact of Brewing

Brewing beer is traditionally an energy- and resource-intensive process. It requires significant amounts of water, both for the beer itself and for cleaning equipment like vessels and hoses. Additionally, brewing involves high energy consumption: heat is needed to boil the wort, and then cooling energy is required to bring the wort down to fermentation temperatures and prepare the beer for packaging.

Beyond energy and water use, brewing generates waste materials such as spent grain, yeast, hops, packaging materials, and cleaning chemicals. Finally, the transportation of our beer—whether via our own fleet or third-party couriers—adds to our carbon footprint.

However, advancements in brewing technology and sustainability practices are allowing us to make meaningful changes. Even small improvements can make a big difference.

Measuring Our Impact

‘You Can’t Control What You Can’t Measure’

The first step in becoming more sustainable is collecting data to fully understand our environmental impact. We are monitoring key metrics such as:

  • Water efficiency

  • Malt extract efficiency

  • Vehicle mileage and fuel consumption

  • Waste production

By analyzing this data, we can implement changes, track their impact, and ensure we are making positive progress.

Investing in Efficiency

‘There Is Nothing ‘Craft’ About Being Inefficient’

While some smaller breweries may overlook efficiency, we believe that sustainability and quality go hand in hand. That’s why we continuously invest in technology that reduces waste and improves consistency.

One of our recent investments is a centrifuge, which enhances batch consistency while significantly reducing wastage. This means we can produce more beer with the same amount of energy and raw materials, increasing both sustainability and efficiency.

Partnering With Sustainable Businesses

‘You Are the Company You Keep’

Sustainability isn’t just about what we do—it’s also about who we work with. We have implemented a strict sustainability criterion for all our suppliers and business partners. By choosing to work with like-minded companies that prioritize environmental responsibility, we ensure that our sustainability efforts extend beyond our brewery.

Our Next Steps

Our journey towards sustainability is ongoing. Our future initiatives include:

  • Continuing to improve waste and energy efficiency

  • Calculating our carbon footprint by analyzing everything from raw material sourcing to staff commutes and CO2 emissions from fermentation and deliveries

  • Publishing regular updates on our successes and challenges to keep our community informed

At Sambrook’s Brewery, we believe in transparency and accountability. We will continue sharing our progress, challenges, and achievements here in this blog. Thank you for supporting our mission to brew great beer while protecting the environment!
